We were all so excited!! We began planning our adventure weeks in advance. Since we are not pro campers we weren't aware that most RV parks & camping sites would be booked. We were thinking since our spring break was a week earlier than most schools in Texas we would easily find a place...WRONG! We were trying to find a place not too far from my parents since they were going to be the ones setting up & tearing down the camper... well, I guess you don't really "tear down" a camper, alas, I digress. Anyway, after scouring the Internet for a park close to Victoria, we found the Goliad State Park in Goliad, TX. Now, if you would have told me that I would have traveled to Goliad, TX (only 30 minutes from where I grew up in Victoria) for a spring break vacation I would have laughed! However, we had such a great time!
Our adventure began on Tuesday and went through Friday. We played games, put puzzles together, colored, played with cowboys & indians in the dirt, collected rocks & just had a fun time! Each day we explored the areas around us. The cool thing about Goliad State Park is that it is located on the same grounds as the Mission Espiritu Santo, a Mission that was established by Spanish Missionaries in 1722. Darren & I took our engagement photos & I had my bridal portraits done at the Mission, so that was fun to share with the kiddos! We hiked the 1/3 mile Aranama Trail. The kids did really well & searched for different kinds of birds & cactus. We explored the living quarters located at the Mission, along with the church that is there. We drove over to the Presidio La Bahia & explored it. I think Darren & I enjoyed this much more than the kids! Once Grace found out they were going to shoot a gun like the ones they used during the battle for Texas Independence she wanted to get the heck up outta there!
One of the highlights for both kiddos was fishing in the San Antonio River! Before we left we took them shopping to pick out their own fishing pole. Luke chose a Star Wars pole & Grace picked out a Dora one. They LOVED the idea of fishing, however, quickly became bored with it when they realized patience was involved! They would cast out their line & then immediately reeled it back it. Oh well, at least they were having fun "fishing"!! On Thursday afternoon, I threw out my line & was waiting patiently on a nibble. I felt something, but it wasn't quite time to reel it in. Darren was on the boat ramp with the kiddos, who were playing with rocks & the worms we were using to fish. Darren hollered over to me (I was only about 12-15 feet away) that he was going to run back to the car to get his lure. I said okay & continued to fish while watching the kiddos play. The next thing I hear is "SPLASH" & "Mom, help me!" I look over & see Grace hanging onto the handrail of the boat ramp...up to her waist in the river! She had gone to sit on the step, slipped & fell in. Thankfully, she had been holding the hand rail, so she gripped it tightly & held on! I threw my pole down & rushed over. I grabbed her up & set up on the boat ramp. She was soaked! We had a good laugh once she got over the shock of falling in. Poor thing! Darren came back & saw the results of what just took place. I told him to grab my pole because I just chunked it down. He did & hollered, "You got a fish!" I ran over & saw my little fish dangling on the end of the line. I made sure he understood that just because he reeled it in doesn't mean he caught the fish. I did all the hard work & so, therefore, it was still my fish! :)
Probably the highlight for Darren & I was taking naps on both days! Whew, was that nice!! We both took turns resting with both kids & it resulted in at least 2 hour naps each day.
Each night we enjoyed dinner out by the campfire. We made it even more fun with glow necklaces & fun flashlights for both kids. They LOVED this!! On Thursday night, Nana & Papa came back out for a hot dog roast & S'mores! Oh man, was that fun!! It's amazing how much better some food taste when you are eating it outdoors. (Obviously, I am speaking of the hot dogs & NOT the S'mores...those are good anywhere!!) We also enjoyed gazing up at the stars each night. We even threw a blanket out on the ground in the middle of the campground area & laid down to have a better view. Darren & I were amazed at the number of stars & just how bright they were, however, it wasn't 3 minutes into our star gazing activity that the kids grew bored!
Unfortunately, Friday came much to quickly for us. We packed up our things & headed back home to the "real world". Overall, we had a fun time! It was a very laid back trip & we are ready to go back out again! Hopefully this will become a Spring Break tradition for our family!!
