New Beginnings!

Summer has come and gone. Okay, so not technically, but gone are the lazy days of summer vacation. A new school year has begun. I love the beginning of school...must be the teacher in me! The smell of new crayons (weird, I know), the crispness of new folders, new back packs & lunch boxes...fun stuff!

Grace began the journey as a 2nd grader this year. I seriously can't believe she is in the 2nd grade already (even though I say that with each passing year)! I remember when I was in 2nd grade. The nerves of leaving my mom...I did NOT want to leave her each day! I remember my 2nd grade teacher Ms. Richardson...I loved her! It's hard to grasp that my baby girl is where I once remember being! Time does fly!

Last year was a big adjustment for Grace. We moved into our new house the weekend before she started 1st grade at a new school (talk about bad timing in our minds...not to God though). Tears were a typical part of our morning routine...for months. It was an adjustment for each one of us. Soon it all became normal to us & the tears turned into smiles each day.

As we approached the start of this school year, I think we were all a bit anxious. Darren & I knew Grace would be okay, but we knew that she would be nervous. Grace indeed began to grow nervous remembering those first few weeks of school last year. We helped ease her anxiety as best we could. She put her brave face on, but you could tell she wanted to let it all out. We walked her into her classroom on Monday morning & the teacher greeted her with such confidence & love that it immediately calmed Grace down. I loved that! The attitude of the teacher makes a world of difference! She made her way to her new desk & unloaded her things. She spotted a few friends from last year and that was an immediate comfort. We told her goodbye & off we went. It was such a relief to this mommy's heart to leave her smiling rather than walk out as she broke down in tears! We picked her up that afternoon & instead of breaking down in tears she walked out with a huge smile. Her response to the age old question, "So, how was your first day?" was a big "it was one of the best days of my life!" Oh, thank you Lord for answering our prayers!! We took off to Target for Icee's & popcorn (this became a tradition last year)! We heard all about the happenings of the first day of second grade.

I can't wait to see where this year takes Grace! Here are some pics we snapped before we left the house. (I have made the decision to leave the camera at home even though I would love to snap some of her in her new classroom. I'll have to etch those memories into my heart because it would just be too much to drag out the "see ya later" times. Ya know?!)

Oh & since Grace was showing off her new school stuff Luke had to join in on the fun! He wanted to pose for the camera wearing his new "Justice League" shirt while holding his new Star Wars backpack & lunch box! He will start a 2-day-a-week preschool after Labor Day. He couldn't be more excited!! More pics of his "first day" to come...
